First, the choreographer needs to have a firm grasp of the general concept of a dance that includes the dance moves for all the members of the group. He or she must know, for example, how the body works as a group for the entire dance movement, what the basic elements of the movements mean, and how the individual moves relate to each other in a group setting.
Second, the choreographer must have a strong vision of the movement that sets out the direction of the group. The choreographer then must work with the actors to create music, sound, and/or effects that work together to keep the dancers in sync and together. This is the “flow” portion of the dance, the kind of dance that is more likely to have a good sense of flow.
Finally, the choreographer and the cast and crew need to be able to work together well at that point, which means that the choreographer must be a very experienced choreographer, be able to keep the group together, have a strong feel for the audience, and be able to communicate effectively with everyone.
The three elements of dance are most often found in dance that has elements of choreography, but they are very much present in many other types of art. For example, the performance of one dance is often followed by two or more dances as they relate to one another. Or, the performers perform a different dance with each other and the audience.
In addition to the three elements of choreography, dance can also have other elements of motion — the dance moves themselves, the rhythm, and the emotional expression.
The choreographer should be able to determine which elements need attention and can contribute to an effective movement. For example, a good choreographer may say to his or her performers: “You need to do one or two things. Do those. Do those. Do those.” Or, to an audience, he or she might say: “These dances are part of the story. You need to recognize and react to them. Don’t forget to be in rhythm. Recognize the emotion.”
The choreographer may also use this technique to make the dance more dramatic and emotional by having one move become the whole dance. In this case, the dance becomes more about the dance itself rather than simply about the dancers. This is called “the dance of the heart,” and it has been one of the greatest innovations of the modern dance.
