I think this is a tough question because I know how to play the violin. In terms of learning the violin, not only do I have to learn the music, but I have to actually practice it all the way, even if I have to practice it when I have the flu. My teacher will be the only person who I can talk to if I have a question.
The violin has all the elements of a good orchestra. It is well-stocked with instruments — you can see them playing a lot in the film. But, you can tell the same strings you use on a violin do the same on a banjo. Also, a banjo is a much more expressive instrument than the violin. So this is where you have to have a pretty large and varied background to play the violin well.
The best way to learn the violin?
To learn it in a way that is very, very practical and interesting. It’s very much a process. You need to really want to play. I don’t think it’s going to come naturally to everybody, but I think everybody will want to start playing it. But to have an engaging experience, you need other people around you who understand what it is and who you are and the journey that you are on.
How did it come about that you wanted to film in Paris?
I think it came about because my brother is a French actor. My friend was making an English film and wanted to do something where we were filming, and he thought Paris would be more interesting and more affordable.
Is the French part of the story interesting?
It’s interesting. It starts with a bunch of people, and in the course of the film the actors meet lots of French people whose backgrounds and their families and their friends are interesting to them. It’s a great story.
What was it like filming in Paris?
It was just as it should be, really. I feel like I’m living a completely different life here in the U.S. I live with my friend in Houston, but I’m not in Paris — I’m in Paris — for about 10 days of the month. Every morning I wake up, my mother has a box of her favorite foods she loves and I go shopping. It’s always just good, fresh food and people with whom I know I have an immediate relationship. And in Paris it just feels like home.
