That’s the most fun question! In the beginning, sopranos played concert ukuleles. In England they don’t play that many. The ukulele is a really hard instrument to play and I hope they keep making ukuleles.
How far in advance did you learn to play?
I used to play when I was a baby.
Did you play the ukulele at all as a baby?
I never did. I know it was like going to the movies. I never played that much.
I have to question those parents who play the ukulele when their child is a little kid because they don’t get to touch them, they don’t have to do a warm-up. Do you like to play, do you like it?
Oh yeah, I love it. I think it helps a lot. Kids can play with a lot of energy, a lot of energy and that helps them play more. Maybe that helps them get better. People come into this life with something and people have to get out of their own way.
I’m going to ask you a bunch of questions about your life. One is, what do you do when you’re at home?
I don’t know. I think I do my homework, that’s all. I’m a very involved student because I don’t let it stop me from doing the work. I love doing homework and I like to do it when I’m in the class.
I heard you just finished a very important interview with Stephen Jay Gould and Robert Nast at TEDxRaleigh. What are your thoughts on how our society is moving in the direction of the future?
I agree with everything. I think technology is going to help us do all the interesting things that we want to do.
I thought about the whole “sensorium” thing. We’re not even in quantum computers yet. You’re going to see in the future you’ll have sensors, you’ll see sensors and lights all over the world, and they’ll be able to monitor everything.
You have sensors on your body, which is something new, but we’ve been using that for eons. The body has always had sensors as well, but now things are getting real. All these sensors are connecting you to your world.
There’s a big thing called the Internet of Things and you’re just talking about connected things, sensors,
